The powerful and violent drug gangs like Pablo Escobar's Medellín Cartel deterred many tourists from visiting in the 1980s and 90s but with security now largely restored to the country, over two and a half million visitors are entering Colombia annually, many of them visiting the seven UNESCO World Heritage sites.
Colombians, like most Latin American people, love their football and people like goalkeeper Rene Higuita and forward Carlos Valderrama are rightly revered in their home country. Formula 1's Juan Pablo Montoya also brings pride to the nation as does an up-and-coming golfer known as “Hombre Araña” (Spiderman), a.k.a. Senor Camilo Villegas!
