French Polynesia
The tropical islands of French Polynesia in the southern Pacific Ocean consist of six main groups of volcanic islands and atolls: Austral, Bass, Gambier, Marquesas, Tuamotos and Society (which include Tahiti, Moorea and Bora Bora). First visited by Spanish explorers in the 16th century, after which Portuguese, Dutch, British and French adventurers all came ashore, it was the nation of France that finally claimed sovereignty of the islands.

Polynesians are famed for their hospitality and although there may be a population of only around a quarter of a million people spread out among the 130 islands (with two thirds of them living in Papeete, the capital, on Tahiti) the warm welcome is the same, no matter which part of the territory is visited.
