Lithuania is the biggest of the three Baltic States and it was the first to break away from the former Soviet Union. It's is a country with a diverse landscape and strong religious roots, to which the incredible Hill of Crosses bears testament. In the middle of an arable field near Šiauliai, there are literally thousands of crosses of all shapes and sizes covering the entire hill. Some say it’s a memorial and others suggest it’s a shrine to the anti-communist resistance but this “cross planting” tradition dates back to the 14th century. Crosses or no crosses, Lithuania is a fascinating country with a rich heritage.

The Lithuanian Golf Federation is a relatively new organisation and with only six golf clubs in the country they currently have a straightforward job.

There’s the Elnias Golf Club, a 9-holer at Kaunas and five 18-hole layouts: The V Golf Club at Le Meridian Vilnius, National Golf Resort Klaipeda, European Golf Club and The Capitals Golf Club whose name and club crest was chosen to bring together the four historical capitals of Lithuania – Kernave, Trakai, Kaunas and Vilnius. The Wolf Golf Club, located outside Druskininkai, opened in 2011 and promises to be an interesting new Lithuanian golf development by Benestam Golf Course Design.
