The Singapore Golf Association was founded in 1961 and its first AGM was held at the Royal Island Club. From these relatively recent and humble beginnings, there are now thirteen golf clubs in ordinary membership of the Singapore Golf Association, with ten associate members and five affiliate members.
Many Singaporean golf clubs boast more than one course and perhaps Singapore’s finest and most exclusive is the 36-hole Sentosa Golf Club with its fabulous Serapong course playing host to the annual Singapore Open, which Sentosa continue to market as “Asia’s Major”.
Unfortunately, golf in Singapore has been contracting in recent years, with the government no longer automatically renewing land leases for golf clubs. The Urban Renewal Authority's 1991 Concept Plan, which is the country's strategic land use and transport masterplan, envisaged having 29 golf courses (up from the then 22) but now there are only just over half that target number in operation. As a consequence, we’ve reduced our Top 15 chart to a Top 10.
