Tanzania
Tanzania, formed by the merger of Tanganyika and Zanzibar in 1964, lies on the east coast of Africa, where it shares internal boundaries with eight other countries. It’s a land of diverse topography that encompasses such world famous locations as the snow-topped peak of Mount Kilimanjaro, the sparkling, deep waters of Lake Victoria and the vast plains of the Serengeti National Park – time to organise that long yearned-for safari, maybe?

The Tanzania Golf Union is the sport’s governing body in Tanzania with a membership of nine clubs, seven of which have the use of 9-hole courses. Two 18-hole layouts are situated in the capital at The Tanzania People’s Defence Forces Lugalo Golf Club (Howard Swan doubled the size of the old course recently) and at the Dar Es Salaam Gymkhana Club, where golf is just one of a number of sports available to members.
The course that will bring both golf and safari lovers to Tanzania opened in 2015 and the layout was designed by David Jones, the architect who fashioned Vipingo Ridge in neighbouring Kenya. The Kilimanjaro Golf Club, situated on the Kilimanjaro Golf & Wildlife Estate (also known locally as Kiligolf) is undoubtedly Tanzania’s flagship course that is routed under the watchful shadow of Mount Kilimanjaro. You may also catch a glimpse of Monduli, Kiligolf's swimming giraffe, who regularly takes a dip in the club pool.
Our Tanzania rankings were last updated in June 2019.
