Bolivia is where the Andes – the world’s longest mountain range – drop down to sticky jungle. Bolivia may be one of the poorest countries in the world but the country has a handful of really great golf courses, a number of which will flatter your driving distances.
The Federación Boliviana de Golf was founded in the early 1940s but arguably Bolivia's best course and the oldest Bolivian golf club – founded in 1912 – is La Paz Golf Club. Set at more than 10,000 feet above sea level, you can expect to hit the ball some 50 yards longer in this rarefied air but expect a tiring round at altitude on the Andes.
In edition 3 of the R&A’s 2019 Golf Around the World publication, it mentioned Blake Stirling and Marco Martin’s new course at Urubó Golf Country Club, on the west side of the Piral River. It lies at 1,360 feet above sea level and is “a full service residential community and sports complex with a starkly modernist, glass and metal look to its 80,000 square foot clubhouse.”
The article continued: “The property also includes racquet sports, swimming basin, football field, bicycle trails and 27-acre lagoon. The par-72 layout has a front nine that incorporates native jungle flora and envelops real estate, while the back nine, on modestly lower ground, wraps around the man-made lagoon.”
