Three coral atolls with a combined area of less than five square miles comprise the territory of Tokelau. Formerly known as the Union Islands, Tokelau lies about halfway between Hawaii and New Zealand.
The British governed the islands until sovereignty was passed to New Zealand in 1948. Queen Elizabeth II remains head of state to a population of around 1,400 islanders and an acting administrator represents her in the territory.
Tokelau participates in the Pacific Games (winning 5 medals for lawn bowls at the 2007 event in Apia) but it doesn’t send a team to play in the golf competition, one of thirty-three sports represented at the games.
