The nine islands of the Cape Verde archipelago are located in the Atlantic Ocean, off the west coast of Africa. The Portuguese discovered the islands in the 15th century and Cape Verde attained independence in 1975 becoming a Republic. The best golf course in Cape Verde (according to Golf Digest) is at Mindelo but you won’t find much grass here as the putting surfaces are mud browns rather than grass greens. However all of that may soon change. South African golfer Ernie Els, in association with the Irish company Cape Verde Development, is to design four courses as part of a £1.75 billion scheme to establish Cape Verde as a new golf destination.
