Guatemala, the Mayan heart of Central America, offers a fascinating blend of volcanoes, cloud forests and tropical jungle and it’s once more becoming an off the beaten track destination with a ancient cultural difference. And you should pack your golf clubs.

The Guatemala Golf Association was founded in 1964 and while Guatemala might not boast many golf courses, what’s lacking in quantity is more than made up for in quality. The best Guatemalan golf courses include: Altavista Golf & Tennis Club, the Larry Packard designed Hacienda Nueva Country Club, Guatemala Country Club, Club Campestre San Isidro and the excellent Mayan Golf Club.

Naturally, Mayan Golf Club is the forefather of Central American Golf Clubs, which affords stunning views across Lake Amatitlan to the volcanic peaks of Pacaya and Agua. Sadly Fuego Maya, La Reunión´s spectacular 18-hole golf course designed by Pete and Perry Dye, was destroyed by a volcanic eruption in June 2018.
