Cuba

As a country, Cuba sells itself… we don’t need to do a thing. With Havana’s fabulous colonial architecture, funky retro style, irresistible rhythms of the jive and salsa, revolutionary heritage with memories of Fidel Castro and murals of Che Guevara. Throw in the odd cigar and a cracking party atmosphere. Hold on a moment we’re off to pack our toothbrushes, but do we need to take the golf clubs?

After the 1959 revolution Fidel and Che flattened Cuban golf courses into the ground despite the fact that both men liked the royal and ancient game. But golf was a capitalist symbol and it had to go in the new socialist Cuba. Since the revolution, Cuban golf has been confined to three courses, the 18-hole Varadero which is set on the Hicacos Peninsula alongside the ocean, Habana Golf Club, a 9-holer at Havana and the US military course at Guantanamo, which in naturally out-of-bounds.

We’ll keep you posted about future Cuban golf course developments but in the meanwhile pack your dancing shoes.
