One of the most prosperous and stable democratic nations in the Caribbean, Trinidad has a more under developed tourist infrastructure than laid back Tobago though the country relies less on tourism and more on the natural resources of oil and gas to support the economy – not that visitors are made to feel anything other than welcome, of course.
Sport plays a large part in the lives of the islanders with several sportsmen revered by all and sundry – Ato Bolden (athletics), Brian Lara (cricket) and Dwight Yorke (football) being the most prominent of these local heroes. Golf features too with the Trinidad and Tobago Golf Association formed in the 1960s to oversee the six clubs on Trinidad and two clubs on Tobago.
