Once part of the kingdom of ancient Persia, Turkmenistan fell under Russian rule in the 1920s and formed part of the former Soviet Union. Turkmenistan’s independence followed the collapse of the Soviet Union and the country remains a key player in world energy having the third largest reserve of natural gas.

Much of the country comprises of the Karakum (Black Sands) Desert and the land to the west of the country bordering the Caspian Sea might seem ideal for golf. If you are planning a trip to Turkmenistan you might need to consider taking your clubs as a new Nicklaus Design course debuted in October 2017 at Ashgabat Golf Club, with Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdymukhammedov playing the ceremonial opening tee shot as Jack Nicklaus looked on.
