Equatorial Guinea

Located in Central Africa, Equatorial Guinea lies on the west coast of the continent and it’s comprised of two parts, a mainland region and an insular region. The former territory is bordered by Cameroon to the north and Gabon to the east and south whilst the latter consists of two islands, Bioko and Annabon.

The country gained independence from Spain in 1968 but old colonial ties remain strong, with Spanish still regarded as an official language and in common use by a population of around one and a quarter million residents. The capital city of Malabo lies to the north of Bioko, though there are plans to create a new capital, Oyala, on the mainland.

Equatorial Guinea’s main claim to sporting fame came recently when it co-hosted the African Cup of Nations football tournament in 2012. We understand there are at least two golf courses in the country, the Presidential course in Mongomo, which hosted the 3E Actuaries Equatorial Guinea Golf Championship in 2016, and a new hotel resort course at Sipopo on Bioko.
