The Seychelles extend to around 174 square miles and they lie over 900 miles east of the African continent in the Indian Ocean, an archipelago nation of over a hundred different granite and coral islands. Vasco de Gama is thought to have been the first European to set foot in the Seychelles in 1502 but it was the French, not the Portuguese, who ruled over the territory in the latter half of the 18th century.
