The British Isles, as they’re geographically known, lie off the northwest coast of continental Europe and they consist of five countries (the United Kingdom of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, along with the Republic of Ireland) and three Crown dependencies (Isle of Man, Jersey and Guernsey). In total, around seventy million people inhabit a region that gave birth to the game of golf and where many of the original courses are still in play today. In a modern world where new, often extraordinarily expensive courses open up around the globe every year, it’s interesting to note that many golfers outside Britain and Ireland still dream of visiting these island nations to experience golf in its most authentic environment.

Top 100 Golf Courses presents a Top 100 listing for England, but thanks to our thirty-six Best in County charts, where we geographically rank courses, we’re able to shine the golfing spotlight a lot wider, onto nearly six hundred and fifty distinct layouts throughout the length and breadth of the country. Similarly in Scotland, which also has its own Top 100 listing, by subdividing courses into fifteen distinct regions, it allows us to highlight over two hundred different tartan tracks. Likewise, Wales has its own Top 50 chart, with courses split into four areas within the Principality.

Across the Irish Sea, there are more than a hundred and seventy courses arranged within the twenty-six counties that comprise the Republic of Ireland and each county has its own small ranking list. We also maintain a Top 100 chart for Ireland. In the north east portion of the island, we exhibit the golf courses of Northern Ireland in a separate Top 30 listing, which can be broken down to display individual charts for each of the six counties that form the country. Currently, the Championship course at Royal County Down is the Northern Irish number one layout and it also occupies the top position in our Top 100 Britain and Ireland rankings.
