Ghana

Ghana – known as the Gold Coast up until independence from Britain in 1957 – lies just to the north of the Equator on the west coast of Africa, bordering Ivory Coast, Burkino Faso, Togo and the Gulf of Guinea. The country attracts many visitors annually as eco tourists to its National Parks and Nature Reserves whilst others are drawn to explore the craft villages, participate in the numerous Festivals or just relax on the golden beaches.

There are more than a dozen castles and forts dotted around the country – symbols of former Portuguese, Dutch, British and French colonial power – and these World Heritage Monuments draw in plenty of sightseers every year.

On the sporting front, football is the number one game with the national team qualifying for the World Cup Finals in 2006 and 2010. The under-23 team also finished in the bronze position at the Barcelona Olympics in 1992. Golf is very much a minority sport in Ghana but there are a dozen or so courses in the country, with Accra’s Achimota Golf Club the best of these.
