Christopher Columbus was the Dominican Republic's first tourist in 1492. Also known as the island of Hispaniola (La Isla Española), the nation shares a border with Haiti and was settled by the Spanish, becoming a convenient base for their onward conquest of much of the western hemisphere.
With 26 golf courses to choose from, the Dominican Republic is rapidly becoming the premier golf destination of the Caribbean and, with five Pete Dye courses (three resort courses and two private courses) at Casa de Campo, including the magnificent Teeth of the Dog, the Dominican Republic really does live up to the hype.
