V Golf Club
Vilniaus apskritis, Lithuania- AddressMaišiagalos sen., 14247, Lithuania
The course at the V Golf Club is set within a 350-acre estate adjacent to the Vilnius Grand Resort, which is located some 20 kilometres to the north west of Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania. Designed by PGA Design, the course is an extension of a modest golf facility that previously comprised three short holes and a covered driving range.
Greens have been constructed to USGA specification with sand-based fairways routed through forests of mature birch and pine trees. Water hazards have to be negotiated at seven holes on the front nine and six holes on the back nine so golfers of a hydrophobic disposition might find the going a little too damp here.
Reasonably proficient golfers might be able to reach three of the four par five holes with two very stout blows but the long 6th is out of reach to even the biggest of hitters with a fairway that crosses water twice between tee and green.
Jon Hunt of PGA Design provided the following article exclusively for Top 100 Golf Courses:
The course uses the natural topography to the maximum to ensure that the course creates a sense of place which could only be found in the area. A high water table ensures that the lakes will always be full and most of them are therefore in play.
The design aims to “touch the land lightly” and a large tree planting programme and the protection of the rich wildflower meadows is very much part of the design strategy. The course has multiple sets of tees on all holes to ensure that the course can be played and enjoyed by golfers of all levels.
Each hole has been planned to ensure that it is at its hardest from the back tees and gets progressively easier towards the front. The variation in landscape also provides fantastic views both within and around the site with a series of extremely memorable holes.
As the first major new course in Lithuania, it hosts a golf academy on a large dedicated driving range with short game and putting practice areas immediately adjacent. Having worked across the world on hundreds of golf projects, PGA Design Consulting believe that this is one of the most beautiful courses in Europe.
