The young people of Georgia can learn golf from a variety of Robert Joneses as they age; Bobby Jones Golf Course in Atlanta is a municipal route with many programs available for junior golfers. When they reach an age to attend college, they can go to the University of Georgia and play the course designed by Robert Trent Jones.
As with most university experiences, these youth will realize that life is hard. Jones cements this lesson with his thin fairways and doglegs. Holes Nos. 12 and 13 may be a 900-level physics offering in terms of difficulty. The former hole is a 560-yard par five, where the approach shot will need to carry at least 50 yards of water to reach the green, depending on where the second shot lands. The latter hole is all carry over the same lake, playing 210 yards to the par three’s green.
Davis Love III recently conducted a renovation to ensure that the course can stand up to the abilities of modern Division I golfers, lengthening the route to more than 7,200 yards from the back “Bulldog” tees. Speaking of bulldogs, players may inadvertently drop the Georgia mascot’s name when they look at their final score: “Uga.”
