Founded in 1856, Pau Golf Club is the oldest club in continental Europe and the design of its course is attributed to Willie Dunn Snr, father of the Biarritz professional with the same name who emigrated to America in 1894.

Pau was founded by leading members of British golf clubs for their entertainment while on holiday in the town. The origins of the club and the popularity of the town itself owe much to the therapeutic climate and restorative qualities of the local mineral waters.

The original course comprised nine holes but it was extended to twelve holes in 1860 then additional land was acquired in 1875 to create an 18-hole layout. Sir Victor Alexander Brooke is credited with much of the early development of the club and the course.

Today, the layout measures a modest 5,386 metres from the back tees, playing to a par of 69 (35 out then 34 in) with three par fives and six par threes spread out across the scorecard. The toughest holes are played around the turn at #9 and #10 (rated stroke index 1 and 2).
