Billed as “the world’s northernmost 36-hole golf facility,” Moose Run lies to the east of Anchorage, at the foot of the Chugach Mountains, comprising the 18-hole Hill and Creek layouts. Many of the golfers who play here are attached in some way to the nearby Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson military establishment but civilians are also made very welcome.

The Hill course came first at Moose Run, set out as a 9-hole track by US Army combat engineers in 1952 before it was extended to a full 18-hole course three years later. On the other hand, the Creek course is a modern Robin Nelson design that opened at the start of the new millennium, featuring the longest hole in The Last Frontier state at the 640-yard 11th.

Carved through woodland and built with largely circular-shaped greens, the Hill course exhibits something of a split personality as its front nine occupies hilly terrain and the back nine is laid out on a flatter landscape. Water comes into play at only one hole, the par three 4th, where a small pond in front of the green requires a forced carry off the tee.
