Freiburger
Kirchzarten, Germany- AddressFreiburger Golfclub e. V., Krüttweg 1, 79199 Kirchzarten, Germany
Founded with a 9-hole course in 1970, Freiburger Golfclub evolved over time to develop a fine 18-hole layout. Unfortunately, due to its location in a drinking water extraction zone for the nearby city of Freiburg, the club had to relinquish two of its holes (the old #2 and #7) by the end of 2021.
Thomas Himmel was called in to address this issue and a plan was drawn up to a) create two new holes (the new #1 and #2) on adjacent land and b) relocate or modify a further three holes because they were also affected by the water protection zone.
The opportunity was also taken to re-sequence the holes, allowing holes #9 and #18 to return to the clubhouse (even though there’s now a bit of a lengthy walk from the 8th green to the 9th tee). Bunkers were also renovated as part of the upgrade work.
