Eagle Eye
Bath Township, Michigan- Address15500 Chandler Rd, Bath Twp, MI 48808, USA
Pete Dye created only a few designs in Michigan during his career, and the one that seems most in line with his signature style is that at Eagle Eye, a public-access option near to Lansing, the state capital. Ironically, although Dye certainly consulted in the design, Eagle Eye is credited to his longtime associate Chris Lutzke.
That architect understood that his mentor knew how to sell a golf course, and thus you’ll find many Dye family favorites across the route, including railroad ties and even an island par three at No. 17. This is more than a tribute course, of course. Although the bold style is very evocative of Dye, Lutzke creates his own risk-reward concepts.
One notable example is No. 3: Dye made clear across his career that he wasn’t much of a fan of one-shot par fours, but Lutzke temporarily begs to differ. Playing 350 yards from the long tees and a more manageable 285 from the middle tees, players will be tempted to cross the pocket of bunkers that jut in from the right to reach the green. Eagle Eye is fraught with such temptations.
