Located on Lake Rosseau in the heart of the Muskoka region, Windermere Golf & Country Club dates back to 1919. The club had a 9-hole course ready for play within a year of its formation then a further three holes were added soon after before a final half a dozen holes were fashioned, allowing members the use of a full 18-hole layout by 1926.

The original course remained largely intact for almost half a century, until the arrival of General Manager and Professional Jim MacLeod in 1972. During his twenty-year tenure at the club, the Scottish professional was instrumental in the construction of more than a dozen ponds (designed to assist with drainage on the course) and the installation of hundreds of trees, intended to add definition to the fairways.

Today’s course is a mix of open and wooded fairways that are laid out across a gently undulating landscape, with occasional rocky outcrops coming into play. Occupying a 124-acre property, the layout features bent grass putting surfaces on each and every one of its eighteen greens. Windermere is also one of more than twenty-five clubs in membership of Golf Muskoka, an association that promotes public access golf in the region.

Becoming a golf course architect after the First World War was perfect timing for Stanley Thompson. Canada’s golf courses numbered around 130 in 1918, rising to more than 350 seven years later.
