Located on Lake Albert, the course at Wagga Wagga Country Club is a Dan Soutar design which took two years to construct after the club’s 1928 inauguration. Today, it’s an 18-hole championship track measuring 6,054 metres from the back tees.
Laid out within a neat 100-acre property, the tree-lined holes at Wagga Wagga are configured as two returning nines, each of which play to a par of 36. The lake only really comes into pay at the last hole (even though it also runs the length of the fairway on the left doglegging 1st) with hooked tee shots at the 180-metre 18th in severe danger of ending up wet.
Highlight holes include the shortest of the par fives at the 457-metre 6th (approach shots must avoid the creek that snakes around the right side of the fairway and green for any chance of a birdie), along with the short par 9th which now plays to a recently reconstructed, heavily sand-fortified offset green.
On the inward half, the 154-metre 14th in the northwest corner of the course features a creek in front of the green (mandating a not inconsiderable carry from tee to green) whilst the 379-metre 17th is rated the toughest on the card, bending slightly left off the tee then heading downhill to a raised green that’s backdropped by the lake.
