The city of Pietermaritzburg is the capital of the KwaZulu-Natal province and it sits on the main road between the Pretoria-Johannesburg conurbation in the interior and the harbour city of Durban on the coast.

The Victoria Country Club lies five miles to the north west of the city centre, beside the Queen Elizabeth Nature reserve, and the fairways of its 18-hole golf course are routed around several attractive water features that have been added to the layout in recent times.

Golf was first played at Pietermaritzburg in 1886, when the Maritzburg Golf Club was founded. After more than sixty years as Maritzburg Country Club, it merged in 1996 with the Victoria Club (formed in 1856) to become Victoria Country Club, operating on the premises of the old Maritzburg club.

The hardest hole on the course is the par four 12th, measuring 467 yards from the championship tees and it plays to a green that’s well protected by sand and water. The signature hole is widely regarded as the pretty par three 17th which requires a precise 173-yard tee shot to the green.

The course was recently upgraded by Golf Data and it reopened in April 2007, after all the greens had been reshaped and rebuilt to USGA specification, with all the tee boxes and bunkers also refurbished. In addition, new water storage lakes were constructed, creating three new impressive waterholes, and a fully automated irrigation system was installed.
