Rankings

In 2002, Donald Trump bought what was formerly known as Lamington Farm from real estate investors who had purchased the land in a bankruptcy sale during the 1980s. The property had been owned by John DeLorean, the automobile entrepreneur, and his Georgian-style manor house was preserved and later converted and expanded into the clubhouse.

Only two years after acquiring the 520-acre estate, a Tom Fazio-designed layout (later named the Old course) opened for play then, a further four years down the line, another 18-hole layout arrived to double the golf complement at Bedminster, and this time the New course was designed by Fazio’s nephew, Tom Fazio II.

The Old course gets all the media attention because it has hosted several USGA tournaments but the New course is more than capable of holding its own against its older sibling.

Notable holes include the par three 2nd (with a Redan-style offset green sloping away from front right to back left), the short par four 3rd (where the fairways tilts from right to left, feeding shots away from the green) and the left doglegged 414-yard 5th – the architect’s favourite hole – which features a risk-reward split fairway.

On the back nine, the 161-yard 14th plays from an elevated tee position to an island green with a putting surface that has a ridge starting in the front middle of the green then fading to the right. On the 512-yard 18th, there’s water and sand to the left, making the bail out area to the right of the two-tiered putting surface a popular spot for missed approach shots to the home green.
