Named after a local landmark – where a particular rock formation resembles three female silhouettes – the upmarket Tres Marías residential development is located close to Morelia, between Guadalajara and Mexico City, at an altitude of more than 6,000 feet above sea level.
Unveiled in 2004, this 27-hole golf complex is yet another project to come from the impressive Mexican design portfolio of Jack Nicklaus and the course is just one of a number of sports facilities – including volleyball, tennis, squash and basketball courts – that are available within the Tres Marías estate.
The Championship course hosted the prestigious LPGA Corona Championship between 2005 and 2009 but was renamed the Tres Marias Championship in 2010, which was the last time the tournament was played. National golfing star and former ladies world number one, Lorena Ochoa, won three of the six events.
