The Links at Heartland Crossing features an iconic checkered flag in its logo and, like the world-famous Indianapolis 500 that happens nearby, this course is longer than you might expect. Steve Smyers recently made waves in the state with his nearly 8,000-yard Pfau Course at Indiana University, and he may have gotten some practice more than 20 years earlier when he and Nick Price set up the nearly 7,300-yard Links.

Most of your round will revolve around how well you work the rolling topography around Heartland, but the design duo will also offer some more manufactured hazards along the way to lure you into risk/reward scenarios. The par four at No. 4 may be drivable for the biggest hitters (just 320 yards from the back tees), but that will mean hitting a heck of a fade to settle across from the bunkers that block the way; smaller hitters may opt to lay up for a pitching wedge in, rather than challenge the biggest of the hazards.

Elsewhere, the 580-yard par five may well be a four-shot hole for some players. If you weren’t thinking that based on distance alone, the mega-bunker directly ahead of the green may inspire you to play it safe to the landing area on the right, with hopes of scrambling for par. Large sand hazards abound throughout the round.
