The Sunset Country Club, now more than a century old, began as the brainchild of several of America’s most popular entrepreneurs, Adolphus and August Busch, as well as Eberhard Anheuser. The beer brewing magnates selected a plot of land near St. Louis and hired the Foulis brothers — a Scottish trio with ties to all elements of golf, as well as a U.S. Open won during 1896 by James Foulis — to lay out the initial golf course at what was then the “Sunset Inn Country Club.”
The current routing, while relatively short by championship standards, still demands finesse from players due to its sloped terrain, tight fairways, and occasional water hazards. The closer is just 400 yards from the back tees, but an angled, peanut-shaped green features strategic slopes to repel weak approaches. James Packard and Michael Hurdzan have both undertaken renovations at the club over the years.
