Sun City
Yanchep, Western Australia- Address144 St Andrews Dr, Yanchep WA 6035, Australia
Situated less than an hour’s drive north of downtown Perth, the coastal suburb of Yanchep, which originally operated as a sheep station, was earmarked for development in the early 1970s by businessman Alan Bond, who had grand designs on establishing a future satellite city for a quarter of a million people.
Sun City Country Club was formed as a sporting amenity for these future residents, with Bob Green and Murray Dawson, the inaugural Club Captain, setting out the course. Fifteen months after construction started, the first rounds of golf were played on the new layout in the summer of 1974.
In 2012, a five-year program to redevelop the course was undertaken in partnership with the owners of the neighbouring Yanchep Golf Estate, with Mike Clayton’s design company working to a new course master plan that was intended to provide a more challenging playing experience for golfers.
Three replacement holes were brought into use at the start of the upgrade process, meaning there was no disruption to 18-hole play during an entire works program that involved realigning holes, resizing greens, installing new bunkers and removing doglegged holes such as the old 2nd, which is now a new short par four.
