Southern can trace its roots back to 1937 when Brighton Golf Club, the precursor of today's club, was established. A decade after the original golfing society was formed, it became known as Southern Golf Club and members celebrated its 50th anniversary in 1998.

Sam Berriman laid out the initial course for Southern with fairways occupying either side of a main road. Some time later, the land on the north side of the highway was acquired by the local water utility so a new nine holes were fashioned on the flatter south side by the Thomson and Wolveridge design company.

A sleek, modern clubhouse was opened in 2003 and 1982 Australian Open champion Bob Shearer oversaw a number of course improvements around that time. The two nines were reversed with the more modern nine forming the outward half and the older nine played as the inward half so the course is now a composite of newer holes and more mature, tree-lined fairways.

The par threes at 12 and 16 have been renovated in recent times and these two short holes are played either side of a tough trio of par fours between the 13th and 15th holes.

Not quite in the same league as the very top courses in the Sandbelt, Southern Golf Club is still a fine test of golf with a reputation for excellent conditioning. Indeed, the club is to be commended for the many dramatic improvements that have been made on and off the course over the past few years.
