The original Southbroom course was a 9-hole affair, laid out by the Umkomaas professional J. Naven, in 1938. When the Southbroom Golf Club was formed in 1950, Al Mandy from Durban Country Club extended the number of holes to 18 (retaining only four of the original holes in the modified layout) and this new course opened in 1954.
The total yardage is modest by modern day standards but playing Southbroom Golf Club is not about power. Its design relies heavily on water features to defend par so a more restrained, controlled golf game will get better results around here.
Only one par four (the 16th hole, beside the Frederika Nature Reserve) measures in excess of 400 yards and, indeed, four of the two shot holes are less than 345-yards in length. The signature hole is the 125-yard, par three, 4th (one of two coastal holes on the card) where it will take you all your time to concentrate on the tee shot instead of gazing at the fantastic ocean views.
An integral part of the residential community on this stretch of the eastern seaboard, Southbroom is an Indian Ocean charmer that may never come top of the South African “best course” listings but it will always be one of the “favourite courses” as its many repeat visitors every year will testify.
Southbroom hosted the 21st edition of the South African Women’s Open in 2013, which Marianne Skarpnord from Norway won with a round of 69 (three under par) in a badly rain-affected event that was reduced to only eighteen holes.
