Tom Lehman and Lee Janzen are sparring partners when debating the greatest golfers in Minnesota history. We’re not choosing sides, but Lehman certainly has a rich portfolio of design in his homeland, including Somerby Golf Club near Rochester in the southeastern corner of the state.
This project was undertaken with John Fought, and features a significant area of native wetland. This factor was handled with respect from multiple angles. On one hand, conservation was key, hence the course’s Audubon certification. On the other hand, Lehman and Fought were committed to using those water hazards to challenge players as well. No. 1 sets the mood early, as players will need to stay right of a creek that winds its way down the left side of the fairway. It is one of the majority of holes that feature a waterway traveling in sync with the fairway, and several others will require an outright forced carry. The round will be scenic and stern.
