Navision – the software company that was established in the 1990s – was sold to Microsoft in 2002, giving the three entrepreneurs an opportunity to channel a proportion of the proceeds into a luxury golf project.

Robert Trent Jones II – who was already in Denmark at the time, working on other courses at Lubker and Skjoldenaesholm – was engaged to design the new 36-hole golf complex and it took all of four years to obtain the necessary planning permits.

Because the site of the former rifle range at Farum is located on a clay base, a decision was made to truck in large amounts of sand to cap the fairways – an expensive option, perhaps, but one that definitely pays dividends during periods of prolonged bad weather as the course still remains in play.

RTJ2’s lead architect Bruce Charlton was given free reign to lay out the fairways and the Old course duly arrived on the Danish golfing scene in the summer of 2010. The New - all of 12 months the junior of the Old – is a tight layout like its sibling and you are reminded of this at the very outset where the 1st plays to a very narrow fairway.

Golfers do, however, have the opportunity to let loose on several holes as the round progresses; no more so than at the par five 12th which plays all of 645 yards from the back markers.

As a teenager, RTJ2 worked for his father, learning how to run a bulldozer. His dad paid him the union rate for the job and he used the money for flying lessons, obtaining his pilot’s license aged sixteen.
