The San Antonio Golf and Country Club has some champion golfers in its annals — including 1980 Open champion Bill Rogers, who served as Director of Golf at the club for a decade. It may be even more noted for its prominent military membership, however, who came from nearby Fort Sam Houston.

Military members have included future president Dwight D. Eisenhower, John “Black Jack” Pershing and others. Eisenhower is reported to have played his final round of golf at the club before departing for the European front during World War II.

The course is not quite as flinty as its most famous members, measuring to just more than 6,800 yards from the back tees, however multiple generations of architects have contributed to a solid championship test. Alex Findlay was the first set of boots on the ground, making it one of his rare western jaunts. More recently, Brian Silva has overseen design work at the course, adding renewed drama and aesthetic appeal to the property’s eye-catching bunkering work.
