Situated along the north bank of the Petitcodiac River at a severe bend in its direction, Moncton lies in the middle of the Maritime Provinces and is nicknamed “hub city” because of its central location.
Golfers in the city and surrounding districts are fortunate to have nine 18-hole courses – four of them residential – to play. Fox Creek, Moncton, Memramcook Valley and Magnetic Hill are all decent tracks but head and shoulders above all the local layouts is the course at Royal Oaks Golf Club.
Designed by Rees Jones, son of legendary architect Robert Trent Jones, Royal Oaks Golf Club is only his second Canadian creation to date (Grand Niagra being his other design), though he has redesigned two others north of the International Boundary at Hamilton in 1982 and his father’s London Hunt course in 1999.
Opening in 2000, Royal Oaks is an 18-hole par 72 layout that can be extended for tournament play to 7,100 yards from the back tees. Configured in a conventional format with two par threes and two par fives on each nine, the course ends with a quartet of strong par fours, each of them over 400 yards in length – a real sting in the tail here.
