Located within a large 600-acre property on the east bank of the meandering Hawkesbury River, Riverside Oaks Golf Resort opened for business in the late 1980s with the Gangurru 18-hole course.
At one time, the club boasted one of the largest membership lists in the country but its success has ebbed and flowed down the years as ownership changed hands several times.
Now controlled by Nanshan, one of China’s biggest golf operators, Riverside Oaks is once again a golfing force to be reckoned with, especially with the addition of the Bungool course in 2015.
Gangurru’s greens and tree-lined fairways have also benefitted from a significant improvement program and additional work in the shape of a bunker refurbishment has gone a long way to make the course fit for purpose in the modern era.
The course hosted three consecutive editions of the Australian PGA Championship soon after it opened. Wayne Grady won the 1988 event, Peter Senior pocketed the winner’s cheque in 1989, then Brett Ogle claimed the title the following year.
