Golfers may find themselves in a sporting minority in the ice hockey-mad city of Saskatoon but they are still in the fortunate position of having no fewer than seven 18-hole courses on their doorstep, all of which lie within a short distance of the city centre.
And even though the Cooke/Carleton-designed Dakota Dunes course grabs all the golfing headlines in this area, the traditional layout at Riverside is still capable of holding its own against any of the newer neighbouring courses.
Riverside Country Club is an old established club, formed in 1912 when Scotsman Bill Kinnear was invited to lay out an 18-hole course with rolling, tree-lined fairways on the flood plain of the South Saskatchewan River Valley. Robbie Robinson is credited with course improvements in the late 1950s and Bill Robinson was responsible for further changes in the early 1970s.
In recent years, the course was used for the 2007 Canadian Men’s Amateur Championship, the third time that this prestigious national event has been hosted by the club. Interestingly, Mike Weir was runner-up for the second year in a row when the tournament was previously staged here in 1992.
Riverside also hosted the Saskatchewan Open in 1978, won by Roger Klatt. Additionally the club hosted a couple of Canadian Women’s Amateur Championships and two Senior Canadian Men’s Championships.
