Formerly known as the Westin Rio Mar, the renamed Wyndham Grand Resort – bounded to the east by the Atlantic Ocean and to the west by the El Yunque rain forest – boasts two fine sets of fairways within its sprawling property.
The nephew and uncle design team of Tom and George Fazio laid out the Ocean course as a private club facility in 1975 before it became incorporated into the new resort structure when Greg Norman’s River course debuted two years later.
The Ocean course is a solid 6,782-yard layout featuring a number of holes on each nine that dogleg one way or the other (and have water in play to increase the degree of playing difficulty), but it’s best known for two of its par three holes.
The short 4th has quite a collection of iguanas basking in the pond that fronts the putting surface so concentration on the job in hand is required if a three is to be made here. The lengthy 16th plays as much as 238 yards from the back markers to the only green on the course that skirts the coastline and it’s rightly regarded as the signature hole on the card.
