Indiana University looked around the Big 10 athletic conference and was understandably envious of its competition: Both Ohio State and the University of Michigan host Alister MacKenzie routes (the latter also has a Pete Dye), and the University of Wisconsin has a Robert Trent Jones II layout. The ambitious Pfau Course certainly places Indiana within these ranks, and may in fact be the most challenging among them.
The university turned to Steve Smyers, who worked with Indiana native Fuzzy Zoeller to completely overhaul the previous iteration of the course, including using space formerly occupied by a par three course in order to allow more freedom for the routing. The course can be stretched to an eye-watering 7,900 yards, putting it right up there with Blessings Golf Club among the longest and most difficult courses faced by NCAA competitors.
Unlike that University of Arkansas course, however, Indiana is eager to maintain its public-access options for residents of Bloomington. Those not up to an 8,000-yard beast can find tees down to less than 4,600 yards. The facility also hosts a top-notch practice facility with multiple driving ranges to match its admirable course.
