Laid out on the northern bank of the Vaal River, the course at Orkney Golf Club began life as a 9-holer in 1939 when Bob Grimsdell marked out the fairways. This basic layout was then expanded to a full eighteen holes a few years later.

In 1992, the course underwent a significant upgrade when Mark Muller and Robbie Marshall from Golf Data replaced all the greens and bunkers, added three lakes and redesigned holes 10 to 16.

Many prefer the back nine to the outward half at Orkney. The 10th is a super par five with a green that’s closely guarded by water and it’s followed by the longest par four on the card, a testing two-shotter that runs alongside the river. At the short 15th, a tree in the fairway, close to the green, gives golfers plenty to think about as they survey the hole from the tee.
