Jerry Pate, graduate of Alabama University and 1976 US Open Champion in his rookie season, was the headline architect when Old Overton Club was developed back in 1993. Working in collaboration with Tom Fazio, he successfully turned the mining scars of an old strip mine into a golfing landscape of true beauty.
The course nestles in the heavily wooded hills which lie to the south of Birmingham and it’s in this sheltered setting that the fairways were set out, with Lake Overton coming into play at several holes on the back nine.
Notable holes include the 426-yard uphill 4th, where a rock wall flanks the right hand side of the hole, and the downhill par three 8th, played across a gully to a heavily sand-protected green which is benched into the hillside.
The lengthy 11th is a tough par four to tackle on the inward half but the demands of this hole are counterbalanced somewhat by the relative ease of the downhill, 318-yard 15th, where big hitters can attempt to go for the green from the tee.
