Hannes Thorsteinsson designed the course at Oddur Golf Club as a member’s track rather than as a tough championship layout. However, the club played host to the Icelandic Golf Championship in 2006 and players then realised it wasn’t as easy as they imagined.
Oddur originally opened as a 9-hole course in 1990 and became a par 71 18-holer in 1997. The club is located in a very popular area outside of the capital, some 70-100 meters above sea level, in a nature park with lava fields and lots of small trees. The design has made perfect made use of the site and the short par three 15th plays completely through the lava fields.
The Oddur clubhouse is beautifully located in this peaceful area of Iceland, where you feel that you’re miles away from the capital city. The club also has a par three course called Ljúflingur but if you’re visiting Iceland it’s the main Urrida course that should be on your menu.
