Muthaiga Golf Club is located on the edge of the Karura forest in the affluent suburb of Muthaiga, to the north of Nairobi. The original 9-hole layout was established in 1913, with the full 18-hole course finished in 1926, so the club is one of the Kenya’s golfing pioneers. The front nine holes are laid out across rather undulating terrain on the other side of Kambu Road, with the back nine routed round several man-made lakes close to the clubhouse.

The Kenyan Open was held here from 1969 to 2002 and during its time at Muthaiga, the competition was won by a trio of golfers who would go on to become Masters Champions – Ballesteros (1978), Woosnam (1986) and Immelman (2000). Karen Golf & Country Club hosted the Kenya Open from 2004, but the Challenge Tour event returned to Muthaiga Golf Club in 2009.

Renovated in 2004-05 by the respected course architect Peter Matkovich, the course is noted for the quality of its greens and beautifully landscaped bunkers. Water, trees and flowering bushes come into play at many of the holes (new ponds have recently been introduced at the 15th and 16th) and it's no surprise that Muthaiga is regarded as one of the prettiest to play in East Africa.
