Minocqua Country Club has featured golf since 1915, however Ron Garl was brought in at the turn of the new century to overhaul the existing nine holes as part of a new 18-hole development.
That involved acquiring a second piece of property across the road; although the original nine were much closer to Lake Minocqua, the second half of the property features more idyllic water views, as several holes skirt the Tomahawk Thoroughfare (which features no housing, but occasional boaters). Several plots of marsh branch off from the thoroughfare, providing heroic carries from the tee.
Players will get a slight warm-up at No. 3, a par three with plenty of fairway to find on the other side of the marsh. No. 15, a 540-yard par five, also features plenty of fairway...but those teeing off from the tips will need to carry more than 200 yards of marsh to find it.
Other portions of the property get away from the water and the holes thread their way through woodlands. Despite its location between two significant bodies of water, Minocqua manages to host rolling terrain worthy of golf. Daniel Wexler commented as follows in The American Private Golf Club Guide: “Unlike, say, a Crystal Downs, Minocqua would not be worth driving into the woods for – but it’s not a bad venue if you’re already there.”
