Horton Park Golf Club was established in Maroochydore in 1950 but the successful growth of the coastal town led to the local council reclaiming the land for redevelopment purposes in 2015. The club renamed itself Maroochy River Golf Club then up sticks and moved five kilometres northwest to a former sugarcane plantation opposite the small town of Bli Bli.

The fairways are laid out on very flat terrain, with most of the holes routed alongside several large linear creeks that rather dominate the landscape. The toughest of these holes is the 399-metre 18th, rated stroke index 1 and often played into a headwind, where the approach shot has to carry water on its way to a heavily-contoured home green.

The relocation was planned as a 27-hole project but only 18 holes have been built so far.

Maroochy River has already hosted a number of top amateur events, including the 39th edition of the Australian Men’s Senior Amateur Championship in 2019.
