Laid out across the fertile flood plain of the River Danube, on the outskirts of Linz, the course at Linzer Golf Club Luftenberg is a 1990 Keith Preston design that stretches to 6,038 metres from the back tees (playing to a par of 72) with lovely water features appearing at several holes on both the front and back nine.
Water isn’t the only hazard to avoid here as there’s a healthy sprinkling of sand bunkers strategically placed around the property and imposing stands of trees are arranged on most of the holes. An underpass beneath the main road connects a parcel of land containing holes 2-8 with the rest of the course.
Highlight holes include a couple of tough, right doglegging par fours at the 3rd and 16th (rated stroke index 1 and 2), along with the shortest par three on the card at the 149-metre 15th. After the round, the stylishly renovated clubhouse – the former 18th-century Luftenberg Castle – is just the place to relax.
Since 2020, a number of course adaptations have been carried out by architect Diethard Fahrenleitner.
