- AddressJörundarholt 36, Akranes, Iceland
You’ll find the golf course of the Leynir Golf Club in Akranes, a small town located 45 minutes from the capital, known as Garðavöllur.
The club dates from 1965 and golf was originally played on a 9-hole course, but it wasn’t until the year 2000, on the club’s 35th anniversary, that 18 holes were in play. It has since then been one of the better championship courses in Iceland and it’s the home course of Birgir Leifur Hafþórsson, Iceland’s only representative on the European Tour to date.
From the back tees, the course stretches to a little more than 6,000 meters, not very long by modern standards, but the ever-present wind takes care of low scores. However, the par five 7th is a brute, measuring just under 600 meters.
Minor course renovations are underway, with the par five 4th being redesigned, so the club are positively trying to improve and the greens are now among the best in Iceland making the trip to Akranes always worthwhile.
