Ashland, Nebraska- Address900 Clubhouse Drive, Ashland, Nebraska 68003, USA
Iron Horse Golf Club is a public-access course that sits amid a residential development between the two largest cities in Nebraska, Omaha and Lincoln. The two nines at this Gene Bates design are dramatically different in their presentation.
The opening nine works more in conjunction with a real estate development, while the second half is more open, due in part to the continuing construction but also the more dramatic landscape. For example, players will experience one of the most intimidating holes in the state as soon as they reach No. 10. The par five involves a forced carry to a fairway that is almost an island, before facing a second shot over the water once again and through a corridor of trees, uphill to the green.
Although that is simply a brute, more thoughtful use of the landscape comes later, when players contend with No. 17, a par four measuring just 292 yards from the back tees. The tee shot is significantly uphill, however those who dare to flirt with the bunkers along the left side can get a generous kick right to the green for an eagle opportunity.
